Tubby Smith = Lloyd Carr?

by webmaster

Couple of clips for your listening pleasure today. They are both from The Herd with Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio. The first clip is an interview with Jay Bilas who in my opinion is one of the few college basketball analysts who tends to be able to give his honest opinion without much bias getting in the way. It pains me to say that since he is a former Dookie but he is really on my short list of talking heads who doesn’t annoy the hell out of me. This is where Cowherd compares Tubby to Michigan’s Lloyd Carr. Here’s the first clip.

The second clip is with Andy Katz (who seems to be known as “a jerk“: see #7). A couple of interesting things out of this interview, Katz says that Tubby’s buyout is “only” 4 million instead of the 9 million that was floating around last week. Also, they both seem to believe that most players don’t even recognize that Pitino even coached here in the mid-nineties and in general have no clue about the history of Kentucky basketball. That’s probably true.

I find some really odd/cool things when I’m putting together a post for this site. I think I’m going to start putting some of these links up when I find them. Someone surely has to find this interesting besides me. Again, I could be way off. Just tell me to stop if you don’t like it. First up, there is apparently a band called Digger Phelps. I listened to one of their mp3’s on the site and the lead singer sounds oddly like Mick Jagger.

I’ll admit that I had forgotten that Bogans was hurt when Dwayne Wade went crazy on us back in 2003. Anyone who pulls the “Pitino could have won in 1997 against Arizona if Derrick Anderson was 100%” idea and then blames Tubby for not getting to that Final Four needs to remind themselves of that as well.

if what andy katz says is true, KY will probably never win the big one again..

I have been exhausted defending Tubby. Have no worries, I will continue to defend Tubby. We have good kids in our program. Even in Nashville I hear the rumblings of the big blue nation. I know my family and friends are finally getting frustrated. It isn’t because of the wins and losses. I quit listening to these talking heads. It has nothing to do with recruiting or winning. The bottom line frustration is desire. We get hit and stay down. We can handle a tough loss. It is because of the effort. The nonchaltantness of, well in particular, the junior class. Kentucky basketball isn’t about some sort of diamond gesture after a 3 point basket. That is individual. That in a nutshell is what I feel is the real problem with Kentucky basketball. Kentucky basketball is about an entire state. Effort, heart, toughness, survival, strength and courage. Pitino’s first few teams were loved. They may not have had all the talent, but they gave everything they had. All out effort. This teams toughness is superficial in what most people say is the leadership of this team. They need to be watching Bobby. If we had a dozen of him, we couldn’t be beat. He just recently remembered something that the rest of the team should remember. Then go out and have fun. they are blessed beyond belief. They should know God loves them. They are playing basketball at the University of Kentucky. Those boys have won the lottery. Be good human beings, leave your heart and soul on the floor, play for the front of the jersey not the name on the back, make good grades and they have any number of doors, huge doors opening for them across the nation in any number of fields. I think that is a Tubby player. A kid that realizes how blessed he is to have that opportunity. Who is willing to be unselfish, give maximum effort, and have fun. Maybe this class can find it in them. Hopefully they do before Thursday. That extra game should be a blessing. An extra practice for there new found unselfishness. GO CATS

My only problem with these two audio posts is the part about a buyout that Andy Katz was commenting on. I’m sure a lot of people may not know this but UK’s athletics department is a solely funded organization. They have there own budget and take no money from the state or the universities academic side. So when they comment on an English teacher being annoyed about having 2.5 million taken for Tubby’s buyout isn’t true. I know this b/c while attending UK I had Mitch come and speak at one of my classes (either sociology of sports or sports marketing I can’t remember) and he discussed with our class this fact that the athletics department isn’t a drain on the state or university. Its technicly more of a business that has the rights or liscense from the university to operate as its athetics department. Personally I think Tubby should go, just a thought.
