Lately, there have been several folks that are confusing me with the Real Gimel Martinez, the guy who actually played basketball for Kentucky. As I’ve stated before, I am just a fan of the Real Gimel, and I took this pseudonym as a tribute to my favorite Wildcat of all time.*
In order to prevent any further confusion, I have changed my pen name to something slightly more direct: The Fake Gimel Martinez. All posts made by “Gimel Martinez” previously here, on Deadspin, AOL Sports FanHouse, and at Kentucky Sports Radio have been made by The Fake Gimel (me), not the real, live, actual Gimel.
I hope this post will clear things up and not clog the lane, like Real Gimel taking a charge back in the day.
While we are getting things out in the open, I wanted to remind our readers that, unless the team’s play “goes from suck to blow“, that “Nahhh” remains our answer to the Fire Tubby question. Some people have been so down on the coach that they can’t see his strengths: He’s an excellent in-game coach, plays the kind of defense that NBA teams wish they could teach and in the past shown us he has the ability and drive to bring Kentucky out of this hole. (The hole that, honestly, he helped dig.)
Whatever happens, we here at Fire Tubby will always try to find the funny in the middle of the Big Blue Moan. Just remember, I’m not Real.
* My favorite 5 6 Wildcats of all time:
- Real Gimel Martinez
- Jamal Mashburn — he brought the “we’re back, baby!” feeling to Kentucky, along with Gimel
- Rex Chapman — All sorts of talent, and a nice guy. He called me when I was battling a severe illness as a kid.
- Wayne Turner — Fantastic leader and on-ball defender. Incredible to watch.
- Eric Daniels — I loved it when he was rocking the afro. And I love watching athletic tweeners like him become dangerous.
- Chuck Hayes — So much heart and smart play.

Speaking of Nahhh, I almost shortened it to Nahh during the most recent 3 game skid. Whew, that was close. You can think of that as our personal “terror alert.”

Thanks for setting the record straight … I was afraid I was going to have to stop awarding my weekly “Gimel” award to the most hapless Cat of the week … I remember Gimel looking like he was not there the day they learned whatever play was being run, so I took to nicknaming other Cats “Gimel” since then … including, most recently, Gimel Bradley, Gimel Rondo and Gimel Daniels … but at least he worked hard and tried!
Tubby is THE MAN and the Cats would win more often if they would just LISTEN to what he says and DO it.
Fire Tubby? Yeah, right. That’ll be the day they fire Coach K and Joe Pa.

Okay, we have gone from Suck to Blow and Or-land-do has got to go! I love Tubby but we need a change.
Call up John Pelfrey quick before somebody scoops him up.

Coaches are not the ones executing the plays, players are. Some players for UK need to realize that basketball is a team sport. They need to change to golf because they do not have a clue as to how to play as a team. If we can talk one or two more into joining Rondo., Tubby will have a TEAM and a TEAM is what it takes to win basketball games. I am tired of watching certain players(nameless of course) think they can win ballgames by themselves especially when you watch raplays and see open men on the floor that are capable of making the shot. All I have to say.

John Pelfery would not make a good coach here. Too young and couldn’t handle the pressure the so called fans put on coaches here. Maybe in 10 years he could but not now. Ford either.

Tubby’s a joke, i can’t believe you guys are still defending him. You guys just won’t believe the facts, you must have voted for Bush to.
